Unconscious mind can understand languages that consciousness does not?
Q. Hi, Please take this question very seriously. Those who know of hypnosis, are aware that it works through the unconscious part of the brain. My question is - if a person per say does not speak english, would and english hypnosis still have an effect on them? Therefore, would the unconscious mind understand the language? All answers are most dearly welcome as I need this urgently. Thanks!

A. Although I'm going to side with other people and say no, you can't understand other languages through your subconscious, I've had numerous dreams of talking in Gaelic (Irish language, I'm mostly Irish) and Italian (I'm also Italian). I looked up a few words I remember from my dream and they were real. Maybe I have a gift for tongues, but that's pretty hard to explain..

Do you think the unconscious mind is rational?
Q. Often in my dreams, I come up with logical and sensible observations that when I wake up and remember the dream I actually think 'I wish I could have thought of that' only to realise I DID think of it only it was when I was asleep! How would you define the unconscious and conscious mind? Also how would you define the relationship between the conscious/unconscious. Do you think that some people's altered states of mind are more in tune than others?

A. Often, it's more rational than the conscious mind. I won't belabour with a bunch of scientific jargon--I'll spare you! In the dream state, you haven't the distractions of when you're awake--for one thing, & your unconscious mind is FREE to journey places the "logical," (inhibited!) conscious mind wouldn't venture. Much of your "thought" in dreams is represented by symbols & metaphors, which to me are the most pure. Yes, some people's altered states of mind, as you put it, are more in tune than others. They tend to be the most creative & inspired.

A. well most are taught that type of psychology - also the brain has older parts such as the limbic system which are based on emotion etc but it is controlled by the the newer parts of the brain like the frontal lobe - i dont think it would be unreasonable to say there is unconscious mind within the nervous system

Y do you thnk Freud placed much emphasis on the unconscious mind rather focusing on what actually could observ?
Q. heres my question again, i had to shorten it in the question box: "Why do you think Freud placed so much emphasis on the unconscious mind rather than focusing on what he actually could observe"? Freud envisioned the mind as an iceberg, with the massive part below the water's surface being the unconscious mind

A. By structuring his theories in such a way that they were plausible but untestable, Freud could safely avoid the potential academic humiliation of being proven wrong. ~Dr. B.~

A. One of your answerers mentioned that a sleeping person has an unconscious mind, which should be modified to being asleep and not dreaming. Other than that it sounds good, along with instances where one has lost consciousness as a consequence of some sort of physical trauma. Professional boxers are familiar with such things --- especially serious losers of professional bouts. Of course Freud is the alleged "discoverer" of the subconscious mind, although most ancient Greek sophists, along with Socrates, Plato and Arisotle, all knew that most human beings were not directly aware of the contents of their own minds --- even waking minds. Thus Socrates's alleged "midwifery" of the thoughts of those he was questioning or with whom he was "dial [cont.]

A. Not unconscious. That means you are knocked out. You mean sub-conscious. There is not difference--in a non human animal. Non human animals have nothing but the sub consciousness. The great naturalist Loren Eiseley called it their "eternal present" because they cannot get out of it by abstract reasoning which would allow them to build homes, raise crops, cure diseases, etc. Hume had it right when he said "Brutes abstract not." But man has no instincts. He has the beginnings of consciousness hard wired into his brain that being the process of epistemology at birth, and from his epistemic experiences he begins to abstract his metaphysics. An animal's instincts work at birth. A newborn fawn will stand stock still if it's mother signals… [cont.]

Is it possible to prove Carl Jung's theory about unconscious mind?
Q. He says as much as the awareness reduces, the more world looks symbolic, and that's why our dreams are symbolic. Can it be proved? Can we say what medics call delirium is the symbols we see during low conscious state, in the same way Jung says? Can we say delirium actually has meanings?
Asked by Mirza - Fri Nov 6 05:20:29 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It can't be proved or disproved. Jung and even Freud's theories are very hard to prove or disprove because like the person above said, they are based on very little evidence and are very very subjective. That's why they are definitely not of huge focus in psychology anymore, and that more scientific approaches such as the cognitive, behavioural or biological approaches are much more commonly studied now. The psycho-dynamic approaches (such as Jung and Freud) are what most people think about when they think about psychology (hence why most of the posts in this topic here are on dream interpretation- a lot of other theories are out there that explain dreams better than that, that aren't so subjective but people don't like them because… [cont.]

A. There is an unconscious or sub-conscious mind in all humans and YOU can prove it to yourself. The conscious mind is YOU, the part of you that is aware of its existence, its sensory experiences and plans and acts. The unconscious mind is not aware so that YOU know it but is aware as if it were another being and acts. It may be what acts when you dream. YOU can prove to yourself the unconscious mind's existence by realizing that when YOU resign yourself to sleep YOU become unconscious, have no sense experiences and no power to will your self back to a conscious state. You are for all practical purposes in a state not unlike death. But something is there aware (but not so YOU know it) and if your mother calls or YOU have set an alarm clock… [cont.]

A. I think so. People's brains are very observant, so we probably connect with each other in ways we don't yet understand. But, as with each of our individual unconscious minds, there's a lot of conflict within the collective unconscious.

A. Human mind has 3 layers namely Conscious mind, subconscious mind and unconscious mind. As you can see, unconscious mind is a layer of mind. Unconsciousness is a state of mind. (when our conscious mind is shut down, we are unconscious) For example, a person in a coma is said to be unconscious and his conscious mind is shut down. But still his subconscious and unconscious mind could be working)

Why do so many non-Christians get offended when they hear about hell?In their unconscious mind they're afraid?
Q. They either don't want to hear about it, or those who do want to hear about it, they want to argue and argue until they try to get their point across, that hell doesn't exist. However I truly believe a deep part of their unconscious mind is frightened of this idea of eternal hellfire and the only way they can cope with it is rebellion (denial of the existence of hell).
