From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. It is distinguished from other ways of addressing fundamental questions (such as mysticism, myth, or the arts) by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on rational argument. The word "Philosophy" comes from the Greek φιλοσοφία [philosophia], which literally means "love of wisdom". From Wikipedia under the

Q. I am going into my senior year of college and I need to write senior thesis for my philosophy major. I am most interested in political philosophy, logic, logical positivism, and ethics. I am planning on either going to law school or graduate school for economics so a topic that could compliment either of these paths would be great! Thanks for the input! Answered by small - Thu Aug 14 04:55:58 2008 How does Christianity impact philosophy if they have nothing to do with eachother? Q. So I was told Christianity has helped mold philosophy but I cant understand how that is when they are 2 totally different things. Didnt philosophy occur waaay before Chiristianity, or is it the other way around? But really how does Christianity or "religion" tie into philosophy? I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with anything. I'm not trying to form an opinion; I'm simply just asking for understanding. Asked by IDK - Thu Oct 23 19:27:54 2008 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments A. The purported goal of both is to seek truth. Personally I think Christianity doesn't seek truth so much as declare what it thinks it is, but that's beside the point. Prior to the 19th century most philosophies rooted all truths in natural truth, i.e. God. The ideas that loving your neighbor is good, greed is bad, sexual promiscuity is bad, etc. have no objective truth, they are simply declared to be basic truths by Christianity. Philosophies were molded around these ideas for centuries. It wasn't really until the existentialists that we started to break free of the template and start to come up with other bases for basic truths, or lack of basic truths. Q. Can a theme of a story be a philosophy? I have to come up with philosophies for these novels that I'm reading but so far, what I came up with seems more like themes. Also, I'm not sure what a philosophy is. If you can explain it to me then that would be awesome! Asked by Squeak Squeak~ - Sat Dec 6 21:50:16 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. First off, the best thing you could do is ask your teacher to clarify what he's looking for. This may simply be a matter of terminology. Your second question: "Can a theme of a story be a philosophy?" Yes, but you would need to name the philosophy so we could comprehend the theme. The terms Theme and Philosophy are not interchangeable. Now onto your main question. It sounds like the teacher wants to know the deeper meaning intended by the author. This may or may not be the same meaning that the story appears to be about. If it is, it's likely to be shown through the main character by his actions, words, and experiences. Either way, your goal is finding the purpose the author had for writing the story. What that means is, you will need… [cont.] Answered by Searcher - Mon Dec 8 04:00:59 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "philosophy" Quotes regarding Philosophy and philosophers: Sourced
