What kind of practical experience is good for an industrial/organizational psychology master's program?
Q. I'm currently working towards my Bachelor's in psychology, and when I graduate I plan on getting my master's in I/O psych. I'm required to do an unpaid practicum before I graduate that is related to my future goals in psychology. I would love to be a "volunteer organizational developer" and all, but that won't work since I don't have any experience in that area. Do you have any ideas?

A. Your unpaid practicum is also called internship. See if you can get an internship in the Human Relations department of any corporation. If that does not pan out then contact the university you are currently attending and see what businesses they have agreements with, you may be able to find something to gain experience there (not in the exact field you want, but experience counts) Join the Boy/Girl Scouts in some leadership capacity, they are always looking for volunteers and and they are an organization. Plus it would look great on your resume. I have some university friends in the IO field and they managed to get internships in places you would not think to look, such as the Girl Scouts and volunteer Homeless Shelters. If you call… [cont.]

Anyone with a master's in Industrial/Organizational Psychology?
Q. Hi! I'm a recent graduate with a MS degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. I've been trying to look for a job in human resources and/or market research for 3 months. Sadly, I am still unemployed. Someone suggested me to try the temp agency. What are the staffing agencies that you would recommend in Irvine, California? Is it really easier to get a HR job from the temp agency? Your input is greatly appreciated!

A. I am just about to graduate with a PhD. in I/O psychology, and I know exactly what you are going through. My areas of concentration fall along the lines of test construction, individual differences, and advanced statistics. To address your questions, using a head-hunter or temp agency may possibly increase your odds of obtaining "a job", although often come with many disadvantages (such as a fee, a short term or objectionable position, questionable or no benefits, decreased chances of any type of advancement, etc.). They may attempt to place you in just about any position, as their main goal is to make money from your placement, not looking out for your best interest. It is not necessary to utilize these resources. Here are several… [cont.]
