brainDefinition from Wiktionary, the free dictionary Jump to: navigation, search Wikipedia has articles on: Brain (disambiguation)From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The brain is the center of the nervous system in all vertebrate, and most invertebrate, animals. Some primitive animals such as jellyfish and starfish have a decentralized nervous system without a brain, while sponges lack any nervous system at all. In vertebrates, the brain is located in the head, protected by the skull and close to the primary sensory apparatus of vision, hearing, balance, taste, and smell. Brains can be extremely complex. The cerebral cortex of the human brain contains roughly 15–33 billion neurons, perhaps more, depending on gender and age, linked with up to 10,000 synaptic connections each. Each cubic millimeter of cerebral cortex contains roughly one billion synapses. These neurons communicate with one another by means of long protoplasmic fibers called axons, which carry trains of signal pulses called action potentials to distant parts of the brain or body and target them to specific recipient cells. The brain controls the other organ systems of the body, either by activating muscles or by causing secretion of chemicals such as hormones. This centralized control allows rapid and coordinated responses to changes in the environment. Some basic types of responsiveness are possible without a brain: even single-celled organisms may be capable of extracting information from the environment and acting in response to it. Sponges, which lack a central nervous system, are capable of coordinated body contractions and even locomotion. In vertebrates, the spinal cord by itself contains neural circuitry capable of generating reflex responses as well as simple motor patterns such as swimming or walking. However, sophisticated control of behavior on the basis of complex sensory input requires the information-integrating capabilities of a centralized brain. Despite rapid scientific progress, much about how brains work remains a mystery. The operations of individual neurons and synapses are now understood in considerable detail, but the way they cooperate in ensembles of thousands or millions has been very difficult to decipher. Methods of observation such as EEG recording and functional brain imaging tell us that brain operations are highly organized, while single unit recording can resolve the activity of single neurons, but how individual cells give rise to complex operations is unknown. Insist that you have an MRI/CT scan. doctors usually don't consider brain tumours, because they think they're rare, but in reality, they are quickly becoming more and more common. Answered by Lily - Mon Jun 7 08:30:02 2010 How to train your brain to think faster in an argument? Q. I am best at thinking and planning before arguing my side. But sometimes, when I am in a heated oral argument, I find my brain just go blank and I cannot think faster and effectively to quickly defend myself. Is there a way to train your brain to do so? Asked by Kayla - Tue Nov 10 23:03:11 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. I remember plenty of times walking away from an argument feeling frustrated and defeated. Gradually over the years I've come to learn that I'd no reason to feel those ways. Chiefly, those feelings stemmed from my poor understanding of argumentation. Arguing is giving reason to a claim or claims. To argue effectively, you need to justify your claims effectively. Arguing is not about proving your right and they're wrong. It's about getting your point across well enough to gain an assent. Once I understood that, I found myself arguing better. Three things I find to give quick wit in a debate are: 1. Turn off the the heat. Don't let yourself get frustrated easily. If you can keep a clear mind, you can be quicker with your reasons. Q. Given the direct correlation between our brains and our actions. Someone who is intoxicated has observable and predictable influences on the brain, resulting in fairly predictable behavior. We know people who suffer from damage to certain parts of the brain are more prone to violence or lack of empathy. So given our knowledge on how the brain works, where does the soul come in? What is the soul responsible for when clearly the brain handles decision making? Should a fallible brain render eternal consequences for the soul? Asked by Waffle Captain - Sun Nov 23 18:52:40 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. The brain is real. The soul is not.
