Writing is all that gives rise to an inscription in general. In Western Culture writing is often only considered as the representation of language in a textual medium through the use of a set of signs or symbols (known as a writing system). Writing may use abstract characters that represent phonetic elements of speech, as in Indo-European languages, or it may use simplified representations of objects or concepts, as in east-Asian and ancient Egyptian pictographic writing forms. However, it is distinguished from illustration, such as cave drawing and painting, and non-symbolic preservation of language via non-textual media, such as magnetic tape audio.

Writing is an extension of human language across time and space. Writing most likely began as a consequence of political expansion in ancient cultures, which needed reliable means for transmitting information, maintaining financial accounts, keeping historical records, and similar activities. Around the 4th millennium BC, the complexity of trade and administration outgrew the power of memory, and writing became a more dependable method of recording and presenting transactions in a permanent form. In both Mesoamerica and Ancient Egypt writing may have evolved through calendrics and a political necessity for recording historical and environmental events.

How should I go about writing a restaurant review for class?
Q. I have to write a restaurant review for my college writing class. Has to be about 1 1/2 pages (double spaced I presume). I went to the restaurant, and I took down notes and made sure to answer questions such as "reservations? cuisine? price range? wine list? etc.". But the problem I'm having is what tone or style I should use to write a restaurant review. Should it be like a story? Or like a descriptional piece? I know restaurant reviews are meant to be a little more "fun" than conventional essays, but where do i draw the line? thanks so far for the replies. i kind of know what material to include in the review, just the style was my question. but so far, you guys have answered tbat really well. thanks!

A. Oh finally I can tell a writer how to write a review for a restaurant.LOL Make it fun and emphasize the food as well as the service. the food can be great, but if the service is bad it can ruin the whole experience. Make it descriptive, ambiance, service, food, time in between courses, and most of all what were the people around you doing, having fun, quite, loud, music playing. Put Humphrey Bogart from Casablanca in mind, if it fits. Or something like it. Let go and make it entertaining, but not long.

A. What is your writing area set up like? Is it next to the computer or are you using a computer? Television within sight? Turn the place you write into an area of little no no access to said distractions. The basement, attic, wash room. Hell even sit in the bathtub and just have at it. That's what I do.

  • I'm a bit of a grinder. Novels are very long, and long novels are very, very long. It's just a hell of a lot of man-hours. I tend to just go in there, and if it comes, it comes. A morning when I write not a single word doesn't worry me too much. If I come up against a brick wall, I'll just go and play snooker or something or sleep on it, and my subconscious will fix it for me. Usually, it's a journey without maps but a journey with a destination, so I know how it's going to begin and I know how it's going to end, but I don't know how I'm going to get from one to the other. That, really, is the struggle of the novel.[1]
